MOTEL (2020) BY PAWL / TTYPES
The musicians behind indie outfits PAWL and ttypes have teamed up for the collaborative concept album MOTEL to be released Spring of 2020. Brothers Paul and Tim Krauss had an unusual childhood to say the very least, they were raised in a Midwest roadside motel and over the last decade they have been composing an album about that experience. It's the stuff of American legends, which begs the question do artistic people create unusual lives or do unusual lives create artists?
There is no doubt that growing up around a small town oasis with recurring guests and an ever changing cast of characters will mold your perceptions of life and the world, and these brothers have put that upbringing to music, beautiful, catchy music. MOTEL is a near hour long summary of the years spent at the motor inn, the people and events that shaped them, and the growth that was forced upon them. It's as much a coming of age story as it is a reflection in later life of the place they called home set to an Indie Pop backdrop that captivates the listeners attention from beginning to end.
The fifteen songs on the album are a sheer delight for anyone that's a fan of Brian Wilson, Ben Folds, T. Rex, Apples In Stereo, Elephant 6 and music that makes your head bop, your toes tap, your hips swing all while wearing a grin. It's also an amazing journey in storytelling as the brothers recount the innocence of childhood, nostalgia for rainy autumn days, weird goings on at a nearby lake, early experiences with women, their own relationship as siblings and an evening of a possible UFO sighting. They also present vignettes on the strange guests they encountered from a wanted criminal to a charlatan preacher to a Vietnam vet with PTSD who hoards newspapers.
The album is filled with singles ready for radio right out of the gate, tunes like "Good Boy Young," "Colorado," and "Captured Light" all of which will punch through your day with sunshine fix. The T. Rex influence on "The Shore," "You're My Brother," and "Jealousy" make for easy rockers to get into that sound like instant classics through nostalgia colored glasses. Meanwhile "Small Town" and "Newspaper Mountains" evoke the best of Ben Folds. That's only half of the album, while the rest will keep you tuned in and your headphones on as the stories of their youth unfold before you. The lyrics are as captivating as the Indie Pop pastiche that surrounds them, with flawless vocals and layers of harmony.
While Paul and Tim are the main men behind the music they had a little help from their friends in making MOTEL. Christopher Kennedy (No Volcano, Kingfathand, Colorstore) contributed drums, guitar and bass throughout; Conrad Shock (Conrad Shock and The Noise) laid down some bass, guitar, and banjo; while Dan Julian contributed drums, Sean Maginity played guitar on "Colorado", Jim Rockwood provided drums for "Room 5" and their lead producer, Jupiter Jones helped out with synth, organ, back-up vocals and co-wrote "Room 5" with the brothers.
Check in to MOTEL and check it out, the musical journey through time and space is an amazing one for your ears to behold. You'll find yourself singing these songs to yourself, days later and that's when you know you need to spin it again.
MODIFIED DEMOS (2010-2013) (2019) BY PAWL
This is an album of 17 demos that were recorded by PAWL in the Phoenix guesthouse (casita), between 2010-2013.
These songs paint a picture of various things going in my life and the culture, all while I was working on recording Modified Dreams (2013), and writing the album Motel (w ttypes, to be released 2020). Each song captures a moment in my life and the lives of different people around me at the time. I hope you enjoy.
All instruments and vocals performed and recorded by PAWL (2010-2013).
GREAT AND POWERFUL (2017) BY GENTLEMEN OF LEISURE COLLECTIVE
Pawl contributed piano, vocals, and songwriting to this unique collective featuring Chris Blount, Sphinx Akashaa, James Pope, Ro, Jen, and more.
A fun album that is all over the place in terms of genre: From Hip-Hop, R&B, to Indie Rock and more.
Let the Gentlemen take you on a sonically unique and multifaceted journey of sound and feeling from the boombastic to the motivational.
“WHOSE STREETS?" (2014) BY TYPES & STRANGE FLOW
Pawl contributed to the lyrics of this excellent knowledge dropping Hip-Hop track. Two versions of this ground-breaking track feature Chris Blount, Abnorm, and Crystol Slim Bracey. The lyrics are, at once, a righteous call for justice for the “least of these” while damning of large-scale greed and corruption. Strangeflow’s beat is unique and strong! Ttypes and Crystol’s harmonious chorus lifts you up, while Chris Blount and (his brother) Abnorm’s excellent rapping bring the hype! It's a muck-raking hip-hop rant with hyperlinks expounding: it's a pop pamphlet.
MODIFIED DREAMS (2013) BY PAWL
These 4 songs and 1 radio edit represent a fully realized work of PAWL and friends playing their pop gems live in the studio.
“Four complex indie pop tracks inspired by jazz, folk, rock, and life…worthy of addition to any indie or contemporary classic playlist.”--The Daily Album. Nov. 30, 2013
This is one of the most refreshing and enjoyable EPs to come out in a long time. Sure it doesn’t necessarily rock out, but the pure pop aesthetic is pretty fantastic and a treat to the ears... - Mitchel L. Hillman, Java Magazine, February 2014.
LUST OF MONEY - FAMSQUAD (2013)
PAWL contributed keyboards and vocal samples to FAMSQUAD’s second and “break out” album “Lust of Money.” Notably, PAWL’s keyboards and vocals provide a backdrop for the single “Vegas Lights” and “Vegas Lights 2.0” Produced by KEEYNOTE, featuring such notable performers as Dizzy Wright, Peter Hadar, and, of course, Omekka and Cashflow Ellis of FAMSQUAD.
EMPIRE DANCE - TTYPES (2012)
This song is for all citizens of all empires everywhere. This song is for Occupy, this song is for everyone. Ttypes wrote this a year ago, inspired by #OWS, and thanks to Chris Kennedy (KingFatHand) and his brother (PAWL), he finally finished this track. Please enjoy and dance through the streets. If the Beach Boys’ Vocals and straight-forward Beatles-esque arrangements had a baby, and this baby liked to protest, the song would be Empire Dance. PAWL contributed backing vocals, development, mixing and production assistance.
I WIN - CHRIS BLOUNT (2012)
A triumphant hip-hop album, which challenges the listener while rewarding them with actual poetry and raw talent. No gimmicks here--this album follows an original hip-hop aesthetic with plenty of thick new-school beats and instruments. This is return of Chris Blount (formerly CUTTA) and he definitely wins! PAWL contributes vocals and keyboards to the track “Cheers” and also keyboards to “I WIN”. Produced by Keeynote and featuring contributions from Omekka of Famsquadilliana and Travis of Northpilot--this album will take you on a journey and deliver much more than you asked for. Did I mention you can download it for free?
ARCHETYPES - PAWL (2011)
Rhythm you can dance to; thick keyboards and layered vocals wash over each song. Archetypes takes you to a unique space and time with each listen, exhibiting eight distinct moods. Lyrics that carry you into the fog of a dream toward the moment when an archetype takes form and moves into the light.
“I'm Not Here" (2011)- PAWL
PAWL and Keeynote teamed up to create something different. A departure from indie pop and hip hop- meeting somewhere in the middle. Featuring powerful performances by up and coming hip hop artists: Famsquadilliana, Landon Wordswell, and Chris Blount. Unique lyrics that stand on their own-- rhythm that will keep you jumping-- this is our music. Three tracks later, still sinking in, unwind with the soundtrack-ready instrumental tracks.
“Guest House” (2010) - PAWL
This album has been described as "cinematic pop" -- songs that tell stories and are, at once, catchy, fun, and at times, serious- but never whiny. Arrangement inspired as much by indie pop/rock as Burt Bacharach, Guest House doesn't try to copy the newest trends in independent or popular music; it delivers its own unique combination of classic and modern sounds.
"Giraffe Dance" (2010) - by PAWL & Friends.
A wacky music video for a ridiculous dance song made
NORTHPILOT- The Bright Brigade EP (2010)
Chicago-based indie rock band with an experimental edge.
PAWL shares keyboard, songwriting, and backing vocal duties.
Open Wounds (2008) - Chris Blount (CUTTA)
An amazingly talented underground rapper both musically and lyrically. PAWL contributed vocals and keyboards to this album which can only be found in bootleg form.
Blue Ribbon Glee Club- Acapella Uber Alles (2008)
Recorded inside a church in Chicago.
Call it novelty, call it performance art, call it straight-up musical theater, The Blue Ribbon Glee Club is the most fun Chicago goofball collective this side of Mucca Pazza. Dozens of members, a chorus of voices, no instrumentation at all save for minimal percussion. The group’s choice of songs to perform remains as compelling as the performances themselves—if you have doubt, check out the version of Sleater-Kinney’s “Words and Guitar” on this club’s MySpace page. Tell me I’m wrong. Tell me The Blue Ribbon Glee Club doesn’t successfully channel not only Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker’s complexly weaving Danelectros, but also Tucker’s incomparable pipes. Listen and try to ignore it. I dare you. ~From New City Review 1/5/09

PAWL- All Jazzed Up, Empty, and Anonymous (2005)
A hodge podge of different styles and moody songs recorded in bedrooms in East Lansing, MI. Relying on percussion as much as piano, rhodes, synths, and guitar the album ranges from funk, folk, to piano driven rock, and even a dance song.
